    On October 1, 2007, The Thailand Research Fund (TRF) announced the scientific and technological research evaluation result of Thailand Higher Education Institutes. There were totally 78 faculties from 26 universities participating in this evaluation. Three indicators for the evaluation included 1) Equivalent International Journal Papers / Faculty Member 2) Impact Factor / Faculty Member 3) Equivalent International Journal Papers.

    Regarding the evaluation result, some faculties of Mahidol University could achieve level 5 which was considered ‘excellent’ namely; Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Faculty of Science (scientific research), and Faculty of Pharmacy (pharmaceutical research) under the first indicator evaluation;

    Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Faculty of Science (scientific research), Faculty of Tropical Medicine (medical / tropical medicine research), Faculty of Pharmacy (pharmaceutical research), and Faculty of Medical Technology (medical sciences research) under the second indicator evaluation;

    Faculty of Science (scientific research), and Faculty of Pharmacy (pharmaceutical research) under the third indicator evaluation.

    Mahidol doctors separate Siamese Twins with hearts and livers conjoined

     

     

    The Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital , Mahidol University, announced that they had performed probably the world’s first successful operation to separate two baby girls with hearts and livers joined. The surgery was very difficult because the twins, Panwad and Pantawan Tiyenjai, were joined not only at the liver, but also at the heart, with the atrium and heart blood vessels conjoined, so that blood flowed from one to the other. The 12 hour operation was performed on 20 February 2007 by a 61 member multidisciplinary team, comprising of 5 heart surgeons, 5 pediatric surgeons, 7 reconstruction surgeons, 14 anesthetists and 30 operating theatre nurses. Born 8 months prior to the operation, the twins had a combined weight of 3.57 kg at birth and 10.9 kg at the time of the operation. Seven weeks after the operation, both girls are healthy, with Pantawan weighing 5.7 kg and Panwad weighing 4.9 kg. They still have some development problems, but these should be corrected in future.
