Congratulations
to Dr. Wiwat Rojanapithayakorn,
The Prince Mahidol award
2009 Awardee in the field
of Public Health
The 2009 Prince Mahidol Award winners were announced on 3rd December
2009 by the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation members. The 18th
Prince Mahidol Award in the field of Medicine was awarded to
Professor Anne Mills and the Award in the field of Public Health
went to Dr. Wiwat Rojanapithayakorn and Mr. Mechai Viravaidya.
This year’s recipients were selected from 66 nominations representing
35 countries.
Dr.
Wiwat Rojanapithayakorn graduated
from faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi
Hospital, Mahdol University.
He is t is the World Health Organization’s
representative for Mongolia and
the former First Director of
the Prevention and Control of
AIDS Center under the Ministry
of Public Health, Thailand. In
1989, he served as the Director
of the Office of Communicable
Disease Control Region 4 in Ratchaburi,
Thailand, and initiated the “100%
Condom Use Program,” which has
been recognized worldwide as
one of the most successful HIV/AIDS
prevention tools.
The
Program’s success has been largely
due to its large scope and cooperation
among all stakeholders, including
government authorities, provincial
governors and officers, healthcare
personnel and commercial sex
business operators. One of the
key elements of Dr. Rojanapithayakorn’s
initiative has been empowering
commercial sex workers to use
a ‘No Condom – No Sex’ policy
with customers. In turn, this
Program has been crucial in controlling
the spread of HIV infection in
Thailand, and in 2001, less than
14,000 new HIV cases were reported
compared to 400,000 in 1991.
Dr. Rojanapithayakorn continues
to promote the “100% Condom Use
Program” in other countries,
including Cambodia, Philippines,
Vietnam, China, Myanmar, Mongolia
and Lao PDR. Subsequently, his
Program has been recognized by
international organizations,
such as World Health Organization,
World Bank, UNAIDS, USAIDS, as
one of the most successful HIV
prevention tools. Dr. Rojanapithayakorn’s
initiatives have also contributed
to social empowerment and behavioral
change in the general public,
which continue to have positive
and lasting impacts on several
hundred million lives around
the world.
