National Research Council Announced National Outstanding Researchers
On December 29, 2010, at Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat Room on 2nd Floor of National Research Council Building, National Research Council of Thailand,
Professor Soottiporn Jitmittraphap, M.D., Secretary-general of National Research Council of Thailand, announced National Research Council Awards 2010 in National Outstanding Researchers, Researches, and Theses (doctor’s degree), in order to promote and support research development and honor Thai researchers who work in scientific and social science fields. In 2010, 64 awards (12 National Outstanding Researcher Awards, 19 Research Awards, and 33 Thesis Awards) were granted.

“Sang Ngern” (Silver Conch) Awards for Excellent Public Relations Performers
On September 20, 2010, The Public Relations Society of Thailand held “Sang Ngern”
(silver conch) award ceremony for excellent public relations performers for 2009-2010. This year,
Asst. Dr. Jirapon Sinthunawa from Mahidol University received the award as he is an outstanding public relations officer of Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies.
The award ceremony was chaired by Ong-art Klampaiboon, Prime Minister's Office Minister, at Santi Maitree Building, Government House.

2010 TWAS Prize for Young Scientists in Thailand
Dr. Visith Thongboonkerd, Head of Medical Proteomics Department,
Office for Research and Development, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, received 2010 TWAS Prize Young Scientists in biology category.
The prize ceremony was held by Office of National Research Council of Thailand and the Third World Academy of Sciences on August 26, 2010,
at Bangkok Convention Center, Central World. Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva was a chairman of Thailand Research Expo 2010
which was held by Office of National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT).
This year, Dr. Visith had studied type, quantity, and function of various types of proteins systematically at the same time,
and applied proteomics technique with the study, in order to study diseases in human in the future.
There are 3 types of project: proteomics technique development, proteomics of kidney disease,
and proteomics of other diseases. Moreover, 90 pieces of Dr. Visith’s works have been published in leading international academic journals,
and he has also been invited to be a lecturer of a conference in abroad. As a result of Dr. Visith’s project,
expenses and national budget for treating patients have been decreased.
It would be a direct and indirect benefit for patients and Thai citizen in the future.

Amino Rice Milk Received Second Best Award of the National Innovation Awards 2010 in Outstanding Innovation in Society Category
The National Innovation Agency (Public Organization) or NIA, Ministry of Science and Technology,
had published news and granted prizes in “the National Innovation Awards 2010”, in order to honor and encourage innovators,
and make benefits for economy and society of Thailand. Also, it would make
Thai entrepreneurs be aware of importance of creating innovation continuously.
On October 5, 2010, Mr. Piyabut Chonwijarn, the chairman of board of trustees of the National Innovation Awards,
had announced the best national innovation awards. The innovation, amino rice milk for babies who are allergic to every kinds of milk,
which is created by Professor Doctor Phiphop Jiraphinyo, Babies Who are Allergic to Cow’s Milk Protein Treatment Center,
Nutrition Department, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, received the second best award.
Background: The innovation is amino milk product that uses rice glucose polymers that can eliminate most protein in milk,
by generating chemical reaction in rice glucose, and then disintegrate by amylase in appropriate state.
These rice milk polymers are used as ingredient of amino rice milk for babies who are allergic to cow’s milk protein and any other kinds of milk.

Social benefits: Amino rice milk for babies who are allergic to every kinds of milk
can be used for solving problem that some babies are allergic to cow’s milk and any other kinds of milk,
and also helping parents who have to pay more than 100 thousands baht for amino milk from foreign countries
which is 8 times more expensive than normal powdered milk, until the babies are cured from this symptom.
According to statistic in each year, there are about 1,000 babies who have to drink amino milk. As a result,
the country has to pay over 200 millions baht to foreign countries. Therefore, this awarded amino rice milk would help decreasing number of import amino milk.
Moreover, it can be produced in industrial production, and export to other countries, in order to get a great deal of income to the country.
Winner in each category would receive a model of King Bhumibol, “Father of Thai Innovation”, and 200,000 baht prize.
This year, there are 8 winners who received the National Innovation Awards 2010 from 311 contestants.

Two Mahidol Scientists Received Outstanding Scientist Award 2010 from the Foundation for the Promotion of Science and Technology under the Patronage of H.M. the King
On June 28thh, 2010, Clin. Prof. Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn, M.D., President of Mahidol University, chaired a press conference, announcing recipients of Mahidol University Awards 2009. The Mahidol University Awards was awarded annually since 1975 to recognize outstanding individuals who contributed to their disciplines as well as to the public. The recipients will receive the awards in Mahidol University’s commencement ceremony. This press conference was held at the Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, and attended by the award recipients.
Prof. Auewarakul received this award from his work in the study of antiviral immune responses in human lung. Prof. Thongboonkerd received this award for applying renal and urinary proteome analysis to study disease pathogenesis, which have novel application for biomarker discovery. On this occasion, Mahidol University would like congratulate our two outstanding scientists.

The One and Only in Southeast Asia Researcher at Mahidol University Received Research Grant from Gates Foundation: A Seek for Cure to Combat Dengue Fever from Wolbachia Bacteria
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pattamaporn Kittayapong, Head of the Excellence Center for Vector and Vector-borne Disease (CVVD), Faculty of Science, Mahidol University, and the principle investigator of A Seek for Cure to Combat Dengue Fever from Wolbachia Bacteria, was selected to receive research grant by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation under the Grand Challenges Explorations Project. The research project is an innovation that explores into prevention and treatment of dengue fever without using synthetic compound. It is the only project in Southeast Asia, and one of 104 projects out of a total of 4,000 projects submitted. The research project led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pattamaporn Kittayapong received funding of 3.3 millions Baht (100,000 US$) for a one-year research duration.

BART LAB Rescue won the first prize at RoboCup Japan Open 2010.
On May 1-4, 2010 at Osaka, Japan: BART LAB Rescue team from Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University, attended the Rescue League at RoboCup Japan Open 2010. There were 11 teams from Japan, [including, “CIT Pelican,” former World Champion ’01 - ’05, “Shinobi,” Japan Champion ’09, and “Nexis-R,” A.K.A. NU-Tech R, Japan Champion ’07-’08], a young team from Iran and BART LAB Rescue, Thailand Champion ’09.

3 Composition Students Received Young Thai Artist Award 2010

MUIC students won the Thailand speaking competition 2010
Mr. Tawin Kim, a second-year Environment major at Mahidol University International College, won the “Thailand Public Speaking Competition 2010” on the university level with the topic “Speculation on our Future.”
The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with The English-Speaking Union Association (Thailand) arranged the competition on March 26, 2010, at The Imperial Queens Park Hotel, Bangkok. The competitors represented more than 50 educational institutions around Thailand on both the high school and university levels. The winners in each category received a certificate and an award from the Honorary Councilor of the English-Speaking Union Association (ESU), His Excellency M.R. Thepkamol Teavakul, Privy Councilor.
Moreover, Mr. Thawin Kim will represent Thailand at the ESU International Public Speaking Competition in London, England, on May 17 -21, 2010.

Congratulations to Mr.Ekachai Jearakul, College of Music’s student, for receiving 1st prize from the 3rd Culiacan International Guitar Competition, Mexico
Congratulations to Mr.Ekachai Jearakul, a 4th year student of the College of Music, Mahidol University, who won the first prize in the 3rd Culiacan International Guitar Competition, one of the most prestigious guitar competition held in Culiacan, Mexico from 1-3 March 2010.
The competitors were 35 semi-finalists and 8 finalists. The top three results were finally as follows:
1st prize Ekachai Jearakul (Thailand)
2nd prize Daniel Olmos (Mexico)
3rd prize Alejandro Garcia (Mexico)
Mr.Ekachai will have an opportunity to record in Mexico with Mexican Classical Music Label, and also be invited to perform a guitar concerto with the Orchestra in the next year festival 2011.
