Mahidol University -- Wisdom of the Land

Mahidol University: Wisdom of the Land

Mahidol University originates from Thailand’s first hospital, Siriraj Hospital founded by H.M. King Chulalongkorn in 1888, and the hospital’s medical school granted its first medical qualification in 1893. The university was founded as the University of Medical Sciences in 1943, and was renamed with great honor by H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej in 1969, after his father H.R.H. Prince Mahidol of Songkla, who is widely regarded as the 'Father of Modern Medicine and Public Health in Thailand'.

With its goal of being the "Wisdom of the Land", Mahidol University has continuously strived for educational excellence, outstanding research, leadership in healthcare services, and global outlook. Thus, Mahidol University was top among Thai Universities in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2010-2011 (ranked at 306) and in the QS Asian University Rankings (ranked at 28). It was also second in Thailand in the QS World University Rankings 2010 (ranked at 228). Mahidol University's particular strength lies in its research excellence, which is demonstrated by its ranking in 2008-2010 as the only Thai university within the Top 500 Universities of the Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities of the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan (HEEACT).

Educational Excellence

Mahidol University has 357 educational programs, with 69 at Ph.D. degree level, 163 at Master’s level, 83 at Bachelor degree level, and 42 Diploma & Certificate level. These cover a wide range of disciplines, including medicine, science, public health, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, engineering, environment and natural resources, veterinary science, sports science, information and communication technology, management, social sciences and humanities, innovative learning, music and arts. Presently, there are some 26,626 students, with 1,569 being at Doctoral level, 6,623 at Master’s level, 17,783 at Bachelor level, and 1,009 at Diploma & Certificate level. Then, in terms of staff, the University had 3,475 staff, with 149 being of full professor level, the most of any university in Thailand. Mahidol has also been a pioneer in postgraduate education in Thailand ever since 1948, because postgraduate training promotes excellence, producing the researchers of tomorrow and the research publications of today.

Outstanding Research

Mahidol University has been at the forefront of Thailand's scientific and medical research from the beginning and the “research culture” created in the early years has continued until today. Most research at Mahidol aims to develop innovative solutions to Thailand’s most daunting problems, such as health, agriculture and food security, as well as various social problems. Many involve collaboration with leading research groups in Thailand and throughout the world. As a result, Mahidol University was selected by the Commission of Higher Education to be one of Thailand’s nine National Research Universities.

In the field of biomedical science, Mahidol staff made key discoveries in understanding the molecular basis of thalassemia, the problem of drug-resistance in malaria, the transmission of avian influenza, as well as possible strategies for treatment and prevention, including development and clinical trials of vaccines. In the sciences, Mahidol University has helped to introduce novel technologies to Thailand, including genetic engineering, protein crystallography and SNPs technology. Research on shrimp, starch and soy sauce biotechnology, and rubber technology has also made major impacts on Thailand’s industries and exports. Mahidol researchers also play important roles in environmental conservation and wildlife conservation. Then, in social science and humanities, our researchers have been recognized as leaders in ethnoliguistics, human rights, gender, cross-border migration, and HIV/AIDS prevention.

This excellence in research has not only enabled Mahidol University to achieve ranking in the Top 500 Universities of HEEACT, but gained numerous awards. Thus, 20 staff members have won The Outstanding Scientist of Thailand Awards, the most prestigious science award in Thailand, and several staff have won important awards at international level, including three Magsaysay Awards, the Ramsar Wetland Conservation Award, the CIPL Award for preservation of endangered languages and the Rolex Award for Enterprise.

Global Outlook

Mahidol University started international degree programs some 50 years ago, and now 38% of its degree and certificate programs are international programs. These 152 international programs, the most at any Thai university, comprise 55 Doctoral, 68 Masters’, 25 Bachelor, and 4 Diploma/Certificate programs. Postgraduate programs, coordinated by the Faculty of Graduate Studies, are based on the concept of “Global Quality-Thai Touch” and attract students from 40 countries. Undergraduate programs are mostly offered by Mahidol University International College, the first international college at a public university founded 20 years ago, which is unique in creating a truly international atmosphere, while maintaining a strong academic focus. Mahidol University also has Collaborative Agreements with 150 overseas institutions, including several joint degree, split-mode degree, and student exchange programs. It has the most overseas students at a public university and arranges an International Day celebration each year. These various international activities enabled Mahidol University to receive the Prime Minister's Award for Export for International Education Services in 2006.

Role in the Community

Inspired by the words of H.R.H. Prince Mahidol that “True success is not in the learning, but in its application to the benefit of mankind” , Mahidol University places much importance on working for the local and global community. Its four hospitals and dental faculty provide healthcare to some 4 million outpatients and 140,000 in-patients annually. Its two medical schools produce 350 doctors annually to serve the local community, not to mention other health science faculties, which produce numerous dentists, pharmacists, medical technologists, physiotherapists and public health personnel to serve Thailand.

Mahidol University has also established the College of Music, to bring the joys of music to the Thai public. This College is perhaps the first complete music conservatory in Thailand, which produces award-winning musicians and arranges outstanding international concerts. The College also has a research project on Music Therapy as part of the National Research Universities project.

Concluding Remarks

Located in the cosmopolitan capital Bangkok, Mahidol University can draw on a rich educational, historical, cultural and social environment to augment its comprehensive academic resources and diverse research activities. It has several campuses, with one suburban campus, two older inner campuses, and a downtown high-rise office site in Bangkok. In addition, the University is also expanding to other parts of the country, with new campuses in Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Sawan and Amnaj Charoen provinces.

Mahidol University’s motto ‘attanam uppamam kare’ in the ancient language of Pali, translates into “One should care about others as one cares about oneself." This philosophy is the underlying theme pervading the university’s activities as it endeavors to imbue graduates with the conviction that, apart from academic achievement, they have equal responsibility to improve the quality of life of their fellow human beings and make the world a better place to live in.
