Prof. Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn, President of Mahidol University, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Assoc.Prof.Rome Jutabha, Associate Professor of Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA (The University of California), Los Angeles, California, United States, for the future collaboration in the field of Medicine and Medical Science, at the VIP Reception Room, 5th Floor, Office of the President, Salaya Campus.

        In this occasion, Assoc.Prof.Emorn Wasantwisut, Vice President for International Relations and the representatives from relevant faculties also participated for welcoming and discussing on the collaboration between two universities.

MUIC visited 4 universities in Australia

 

 

 


         From August 12-17, 2010, 49 administrators and executives from Mahidol University International College visited four Australian universities to observe administration methods, academic affairs and research methods.  The group visited the University of Sydney and Macquarie University in Sydney and University of Melbourne and Monarch University in Melbourne in order to gain experience and knowledge that will continue to help MUIC develop into a leading institution in Asia.

The AIDS Vaccine for Asia Network Meeting 2010 (AVAN) at Holiday Inn Pattaya, Thailand on June 29-30, 2010

 

 

 


         Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University together with Ministry of Public health and AFRIMS co-chaired by Assoc. Prof. Pratap Singhasivanon, Prof. Dr. Punnee Pitisuttithum, Dr. Supachai Rerks – Ngram and Dr. Joseph Chiu, had successfully organized 3rd Annual meeting for AIDS vaccine for Asia network a 2 day programme on June 29 – 30th 2010 at Holiday Inn Pattaya which was a follow up meeting of Beijing in 2009.

        This meeting was convened to bring together all stakeholders, scientists, experts, Government officials, policy makers, institutions from Asian countries and other collaborating international organization for discussion on regional role and various activities to be undertaken to accelerate the development of region specific HIV Vaccine,  was presided by Prof. Napatawn Banchuin, Vice president of Mahidol University, Assoc. Prof. Pratap Singhasivanon Dean Faculty of Tropical Medicine and Dr. Manit Thiratantikanon, Director General of Disease Control Department, Thailand stating the opening remarks.

        Over 60 participants from different countries such as Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Phillipines, Switzerland, Vietnam, Russia, Singapore, Sweden, USA, Thailand and representatives from various international organization such as WHO/UNAIDS, GHVE, IAVI, NIH and MHRP attended the meeting. This 2 day programme was structured into workshops on topics in various areas such as Clinical/Regulatory, Community/Ethical issues, Laboratory research and vaccine development including constructs available in the region, Non Human primate research, Young investigators and public - private partnership discussing on the aspects of current activities in the field, Gap/ challenges in the vaccine research in the region and proposing set of activities for AVAN to undertake as short and long term plans. This meeting was possible with the supports from different organizations such as NIH,  WHO/UNAIDS, GHVE, IAVI, and MHRP.

Dr. Yamazaki gave a special lecture entitiled “RNAi silencing and pathway mining of camptothecin biosynthesis in Ophiorrhiza pumila”

 

 

 


         Associate Professor Dr. Mami Yamazaki, an expert in molecular biology of medicinal plants, from the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chiba University, Japan visited MUPY. Dr. Yamazaki gave a special lecture entitiled “RNAi silencing and pathway mining of camptothecin biosynthesis in Ophiorrhiza pumila” on 4th May 2010 at Room 409 from 13.30 -15.00. In addition, Dr. Yamazaki also served as a thesis examination committee for Ms. Sirintara Korsangrueng, a Doctoral student from the Department of Pharmaceutical Botany. Assoc. Prof. Sompop Prathanturarug serves as the contact point for this collaboration.

Presenting research article in the international seminar, hosted by Inaugural APEC-SEAMEO RELC International Seminar

 

 

 


         During 19-21 April 2010, Dr.Singhanat Nomnian, Head of Division of Foreign Languages from Mahidol University Kanchanaburi Campus, attended an international seminar in Singapore for presenting the research article on “Preparing Thai Postgraduate Students’ Oral Communications in Multilingual Organizations through EIL Pedagogy”, that Inaugural APEC-SEAMEO RELC international seminar organized this event with the theme of “Language Education: An Essential for a Global Economy”.

        This article was a part of PHD thesis study of Dr.Singhanat, while studying at the University of Leicester, United Kingdom. Nowadays, this paper is accepted as an international work and also published as the book named “Positioning in Multilingual Classrooms: A Case Study of Thai Students in a British University” by VDM Verlag Dr.Müller Publishing, Germany.

         On 18-28 March, 2010, Clin. Prof. Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn, M.D., President of Mahidol University, Assoc. Prof Passiri Nisalak, D.D.S., Vice President for Administration and University Council Secretary of Mahidol University, Assoc. Prof. Theeralaksna Suddhasthira, Dean, Faculty of Dentistry of Mahidol University participated at The 3rd SEAMEO RIHED-AGB Programme : A Short Course on University Governance and Development at Orlando and Chicago, The United States of America.

        This Short Course was coordinated by SEAMEO Regional Centre for Higher Education and Development(RIHED) and Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB) for University Council, President and Administrative Board of the Higher Education.

        The main topic "The 2010 AGB National Conference on Trusteeship: Provocative, Timely, Topical, Actionable" was held at Orlando, Florida State between 19-23 March, 2010, After the conference the Executives of Mahidol University visited Rollins College, University of Central Florida, Valencia Community College, University of Chicago, University of Illinois and DePaul University on 24-27 March, 2010.

The Lecturers of Mahidol University visited 3 universities in Taiwan

 

 

 


         Following the 41st Asia Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health (APACPH ), in Taipei on 3-6 December 2009, the representatives from the Faculty of Public Health, Mahidol Univerisity, led by Assoc. Prof. Phitaya Charupoonphol, Dean, Faculty of Public Health, including Deputy Deans, an Assistant Dean and supporting staffs, visited 3 universities in Taiwan, the Republic of China (ROC); National Taiwan University, China Medical University, and Taipei Medical University.

        The visiting program established stronger links with Taiwanese colleagues through the facilitative sharing of administrative and human resources. The objectives of the visit were to initially meet senior Taiwanese health staff and to see at first hand, both the Public Health facilities and the facilities of related fields. Secondly, opportunities for joint research collaboration were discussed, and thirdly, ongoing students exchange programs were proposed, including a reciprocation of students exchange program already established with both China Medical University and National Taiwan University.

        A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the faculties of Public Health of Mahidol University and the College of Public Health of Taipei Medical University and soon after returning to Bangkok, another MOU was signed between the faculty of Public Health of Mahidol and the College of Public Health of China Medical University.

1st Thai MPHM Alumni Reunion

 

 

 


         The ASEAN Institute for Health Development (AIHD) organized the "1st Thai MPHM Alumni Reunion" which was held at Boonsiri Hall on the 19th February, 2010. The objectives of which were to develop the academic alumni network, build the relationship between the alumni and the AIHD, follow up the progression of the alumni's work in their respective field, and to advocate support for continuing education under the MPHM programme. Dr. Supattra Srivanichakorn - Director of AIHD, headed this event with the able support of the AIHD teams. Honorable guests from highly respected university attended this groundbreaking activity.

Faculty of Pharmacy hosted the scientific conference on Weapon of Mass Destruction Issue

 

 

 


         Department of Biochemistry, MUPY led by Assist. Prof. Wichet Leelamanit in collaboration with Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters and Strategic Studies Center held a scientific conference on Weapon of Mass Destruction (WMD) on 19 March 2010, at Room 203, Thepparat Building. Although Thailand is not currently deemed a high profile target for WMD, preparation and readiness to counterbalance such threat is important for our national security. The objective of this conference is therefore to keep related officials both military and civil sectors informed about WMD and how to deal with it. The conference also serves as a platform for Thai officials to network and collaborate among themselves for the benefit of the country. This conference enjoyed a large number of participants including military officers, policeman, doctors, pharmacists and other related personnel. In addition, over 20 of various types of media and news reporters at a national level participated and reported this event to the public.

MOU Signing Ceremony between Mahidol University and Chiba University, Japan

 

 

 


         On 10th March, 2010, at the Faculty of Science, Clin.Prof. Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn, President of Mahidol University, signed an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with Prof.Yasushi Saito, President of Chiba University (CU), Japan, purposely for the establishment of International Exchange Centers (IEC): MU-CU office and future collaboration.

        In this occasion, Prof.Skorn Mongkolsuk, Dean, Faculty of Science also reported the background of academic activities between Faculty of Science, MU and Faculty of Horticulture, CU, and the establishment of International Exchange Center (IEC). Then, the statement moved on to the story of collaboration about Pharmaceutical Sciences between two universities, reported by Assoc.Prof.Chuthamanee Suthisisang, Dean of Faculty of Pharmacy. Lastly, when finishing signing ceremony, Clin.Prof. Piyasakol and Prof.Yasushi Saito officially opened the International Exchange Center (IEC) together.

Prof. Dr. Nathsuda Pumijumnong, Deputy Dean for Research and Training, and Dr. Narin Boontanon, Deputy Dean for Student Affairs warmly welcomed Prof. Dr. Hirokazu Kobayashi, Dean of the Graduate School of Nutritional and Environmental Sciences at the University of Shizuoka, Prof. Dr. Takashi Amagai, Prof. Dr. Hidehiko Yokogoshi, Prof. Dr. Hiroshi Noguchi, and Ms. Yuriko Nojima to the Faculty for the signing of an Academic Exchange Agreement between Mahidol University and the University of Shizuoka

        The MOU aims to advance knowledge and enhance the capability of staff at all levels who work in environment and natural resource management organizations and related fields. The MOU also supports student and staff exchange programmes as well as information exchange, joint research opportunities, and other related academic collaboration.

         On Wednesday 3rd, 2010, Ms.Suchada Phruthonkul, in the name of Director from Division of International Relations, and the representatives from relevant faculties; Faculty of Science, Faculty of Engineering, and Mahidol University International College, welcomed Dr.Gerd Gidion, Advisor to the President, Professor for Technical Didactics at the Institute for Pedagogies, Head of the Center for Distance Learning, and Mr.Michael Grosch, Researcher, from Kartlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany, in the occasion of visiting program and discussion on the possible collaboration. MOU Signing Ceremony between Faculty of Public Health, MU and Health Sciences U. of Mongolia

 

 

 


         On 23rd February, 2010, Dr.Phitaya Charupoonphol, Dean of the faculty of Public Health of Mahidol university, and Dr. Tserenkhuugy Lkhagvasuren, President of the Health Sciences University of Mongolia signed a memorandum of understanding which catalysed a program of full educational exchange between the two universities. Ways of initializing the program were discussed, and both parties, in a spirit of mutual trust, included a faculty member exchange program scheduled for next June. This occasion took place at the meeting room 7508, Multipurpose Building, 5th Floor, Faculty of Public Health.

Signing an MOU with Hamburg University, Germany

 

 

 


         On February 19th, 2010, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wariya Chinwanno, Dean of the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities of Mahidol University signed an MOU(Memorandum of Understanding) with Prof. Dr. Michael Zimmernann, Director of the Hamburg’s Centre for Buddhist Studies, Hamburg University, Germany.

        This special occasion was the academic collaborating for doing research works in area of the International PhD. Program in Buddhist Studies of both university. This event held at the PhD. Seminar Room, Faculty of Social Science and Humanities of Mahidol University, Salaya Campus.

         On Tuesday, 16th February 2010, at Mahidol University, Salaya Campus, Clin. Visiting Program for the participants of the 11th ASEA-UNINET Plenary Meeting

 

 

 


         On Thursday, 11th February 2010, Prof.Napatawn Banchuin, Vice President of Mahidol University and the executives from relevant Faculties, welcomed the participants of the 11th ASEAN-European Academic University Partnerships Network (ASEA-UNINET) Plenary Meeting, from many countries such as Austria, Indonesia, Italy, Spain, and Vietnam, involved the delegations from Kasetsart University, and Prince of Songkla University, in the occasion of visiting program and discussion on future collaboration.

        This program took place at the meeting room 515, 5th floor, Office of the President, Mahidol University, Salaya. After that, all participants had an opportunity to take a campus tour and visit the Research Institute for Language and Cultures of Asia. Then, they finally went to the Collage of Music for visiting and having a special dinner at Music Square Restaurant, hosted by Assoc. Prof. Sugree Charoensook, Dean of the Collage of Music.

Welcoming visitor from University of Liverpool

 

 

 


         Clin. Prof. Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn, President of Mahidol University and Prof. Stephen Holloway (seated: left), Executive Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Science and Engineering of University of Liverpool, United Kingdom signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 13th January 2010 at Queen Victoria Club, British Embassy, Bangkok. The signing was witnessed by executives from both universities.

        The representatives of University of Liverpool, including Prof. Samar Hasnain, Prof. Andrew I. Cooper and Prof. Chris Frid also visited MU’s Faculty of Science and were welcomed by the University’s administrators.
