Faculty
of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University
has extensively studied human helminthic
diseases since its establishment in
1960. In the past, knowledge of their
intermediate hosts was scared. During
the years 1963-1970, Dr. Rolf A. M Brandt,
a German Malacologist, incorporated
with the Faculty of Tropical Medicine
in an intensive survey of fresh- and
brackish-water mollusks in Thailand
and neighboring countries, namely Myanmar,
Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia. The investigations
found about 400 species of fresh- and
brackish-water mollusks in Thailand
and about 20 species were of medical
importance. The investigations were
benefited to the study of human parasitology.
In 1974, Dr. Brandt wrote the book for
identification of mollusks in Thailand
“The non-marine aquatic
Mollusca of Thailand”.
In
1979, with an Institution Strengthening
Grant from the World Health Organization
Special Programme for Research and Training
in Tropical Diseases (WHO/TDR), the
Mollusk Museum was officially established
at Department of Social and Environmental
Medicine (then, the Department of Tropical
Medicine), Faculty of Tropical medicine,
Mahidol University as a reference museum
of mollusks in order to serve the objectives
of the Applied Malacology Center in
Southeast Asia.
Currently, with the collection of the
shells of the snails of medical and
veterinary importance since 1963, the
Mollusk Museum is considered the most
complete collection of fresh- and brackish-water
mollusks from all over localities in
Thailand. Over 400 species of fresh–and
brackish-water mollusks are available.
Display is systematically arranged and
standardized.
