| Networking is becoming increasingly
important in academic life, not only for
research, but also for teaching. Networking
often makes use of the complementary strengths
and resources of those involved to provide
synergy to solve problems. Sometimes,
networking can involve those from different
institutions or different countries, and
sometimes, it may also require experts
from different disciplines.
Thus teaching of certain fields
requires expertise from many disciplines
to give students the necessary vision
and depth to achieve understanding and
mastery. Similarly, many research problems
must be approached from the viewpoint
of different disciplines and/or require
the expertise of different technologies
to solve.
So faculties, like the Faculty of Science,
have established multidisciplinary Centers
of Excellence, and Mahidol
University itself has research grants
to support interdisciplinary research.
Some examples are provided here of some
networking and interdisciplinary activities
in research and teaching at Mahidol University,
to provide a glimpse of how the university
makes use of the diversity of expertise
in its staff to tackle certain problems.
