Welcome to 6th QS-APPLE

On behalf of Mahidol University, I am very pleased to welcome all participants and guests to the 6th QSAPPLE Conference and Exhibition 2010.

The QS-APPLE Conference has gained increased momentum over the years, drawing the attention of top international educators in the Asia-Pacific region and providing a platform for valuable academic exchanges through plenary sessions, parallel tracks, and networking opportunities.

Originating from Thailand’s first hospital, established in 1888, the university was founded as the University of Medical Sciences in 1943, and was renamed with great honor by H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej in 1969, after his father H.R.H. Prince Mahidol of Songkla, who is widely regarded as the 'Father of Modern Medicine and Public Health in Thailand”. Since then, Mahidol University has diversified from its strengths in medicine and science, so it now also excels in social sciences, arts and humanities. With its many awards and achievements in diverse areas such as medicine, science, environmental studies, language, and music, Mahidol University has become an internationally acclaimed institution, recognized for its academic excellence.

In the increasingly globalised world that we live in today, Mahidol University recognises the importance of international collaboration and the valuable outcomes that can come from such cooperation. As a result, it has been a major proponent of international education in Thailand for many years and was awarded the Prime Minister’s Award for International Education Services in 2006. Indeed, Mahidol University established the first International College at a public university and also has the most overseas students at a public university in Thailand.

This vision for international education has encouraged us to co-host the 6th QS-APPLE conference with the QS Educational Trust. I hope that all of you will take the opportunity during this conference to forge new partnerships, share your expertise, and discover new knowledge. Mahidol University is truly honoured and privileged to host this important gathering and hopes that it will lead to the strengthening of higher education and cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region, which will propel the region into leadership on the world stage.

I am confident that the 6th QS-APPLE Conference 2010 will be an insightful and inspiring experience for important discussions on higher education, as the previous conferences had been. Although we regret the circumstances which necessitated the change of venue to Singapore, Mahidol University still aims to create an environment for all participants to discover the uniqueness of Thai friendship and hospitality.
