The
Faculty of Medicine Siriraj
Hospital, Mahidol University,
announced that they had
performed probably the world’s
first successful operation
to separate two baby girls
with hearts and livers joined.
The surgery was very difficult
because the twins, Panwad
and Pantawan Tiyenjai, were
joined not only at the liver,
but also at the heart, with
the atrium and heart blood
vessels conjoined, so that
blood flowed from one to
the other. The 12 hour operation
was performed on 20 February
2007 by a 61 member multidisciplinary
team, comprising of 5 heart
surgeons, 5 pediatric surgeons,
7 reconstruction surgeons,
14 anesthetists and 30 operating
theatre nurses. Born 8 months
prior to the operation,
the twins had a combined
weight of 3.57 kg at birth
and 10.9 kg at the time
of the operation. Seven
weeks after the operation,
both girls are healthy,
with Pantawan weighing 5.7
kg and Panwad weighing 4.9
kg. They still have some
development problems, but
these should be corrected
in future.
