Prof. Suthat Fucharoen,
M.D. who dedicated himself
in thalassemia research
for more than 30 years.
Prof.
Suthat Fucharoen, M.D.,
is a Professor 11 at the
Institute of Science and
Technology for Research
and Development, Mahidol
University. He has continuously
been conducting research
on thalassemia, and his
findings provide insights
into different types of
genetic abnormality that
lead to thalassemia in Thai
population. He also developed
methods in diagnosis of
fetal abnormality, which
could be carried out through
diagnosis of genetic abnormality
during the antenatal care.
It became a novel approach
to control and prevent newborn
thalassemic patient in Thailand.
Furthermore, he studied
the interaction of genetic
defect and the different
degree of disease severity,
which increases our understanding
of abnormality in blood
clotting in thalassemic
patients that occurs more
rapid than among normal
person. This abnormal condition
leads to the treatment using
anticoagulation drugs, such
as aspirin. He also studied
the pathophysiology of iron
deficiency as well as the
benefits of using iron chelating
agents. He also collaborated
with both domestic and foreign
organizations in creating
the thalassemia research
network.
The
