Six
scholarships, each worth 307,800
Baht, support by the Australian
Federal Police and the Australian
Embassy, Thailand were awarded to
the graduate students of Mahidol
University. Prof. Skorn Mongkolsuk,
Ph.D., Dean, Faculty of Science,
Mahidol University received the
scholarships on behalf of the students
in the Master of Science Programme
in Forensic Science in a scholarship
presentation ceremony held on Monday,
May 25th, 2009 at room K102, Chalermprakiet
Building, Faculty of Science, Phayathai
campus.
H.E. Mr. Paul
Grigson, Australian Ambassador to
the Kingdom of Thailand presided
in the presentation of Australian
Federal Police (AFP) – Australian
Embassy scholarship. The scholarship
aims to develop human resource in
the field of forensic science in
Thailand, in particular for the
students in Master of Science Programme
in Forensic Science, Mahidol University.
This year, four police officers
from the Office of Police Forensic
Science, Royal Thai Police, and
two governmental officers from the
Central Institute of Forensic Science,
Ministry of Justice, received the
scholarship. Honorary guests, Police
Major General Prapat Kontrong, Deputy
Commissioner of the Royal Thai Police’s
Office of Police Forensic Science,
and Dr. Khunying Porntip Rojanasunan
, Director of Central Institute
of Forensic Science, Ministry of
Justice, and Prof. Chumpon Wilasrusmee,
Assistant to the President for International
Affairs, Mahidol University, attended
the ceremony.
The
Master of Science Programme in Forensic
Science (International Programme)
was launched in 2004, aiming to
produce graduates in forensic science,
who specializes in laboratory analysis
and assisting law enforcement. Forensic
science is considered a discipline
that is short on human resource,
and there is an urgent need. This
program was developed in collaboration
with the Forensic Science Unit,
University of Strathclyde in UK,
where forensic science has been
taught since 1966, and the two main
forensic agencies in Thailand, The
Royal Thai Police Office of Forensic
Science (RTPOFS), and the Central
Institute of Forensic Science (CIFS),
Ministry of Justice. This program
is a 12 months program. To-date,
there is a total of 45 graduates.
The graduates entered to work in
various governmental agencies such
as the Ministry of Justice, Royal
Thai Army, hospitals, various universities
as well as private sector. Currently,
there are 45 students enrolled in
the program, and six students received
the scholarship from the Australian
Government similar to the previous
year, which was the first year in
awarding the scholarship.
