On
November 18th, 2009, the
Faculty of Medicine Siriraj
Hospital, Mahidol University
organized an award ceremony
for Sood Sangvichien Lecture
2009 for Prof. M.R. Jisnuson
Svasti, Department of Biochemistry
and Head of the Center
of Excellence in Protein
Structure and Function,
Faculty of Science, Mahidol
University. Clin. Prof.
Teerawat Kulthanan, Dean,
Faculty of Medicine Siriraj
Hospital presented the
award. The event took place
at Tripetch Room, 15th
Floor, 100th Year Somdech
Phra Srinagarindra, Faculty
of Medicine Siriraj Hospital.
On
this occasion, Prof. M.R.
Jisnuson Svasti delivered
a lecture, “From Structural
Biology Towards a Better
Understanding of Life.”
He acknowledged that structural
biology covers the study
of biological system, starting
at large molecules, organelles,
cell, tissue, organ, and
body. With the development
in research and technology,
structural biology has
cover and connects various
disciplines, such as physiology
and biochemistry. The purpose
of structural biology is
to understand the relationship
between structure and function
of life.
With
the interest in biochemistry
and protein since his undergraduate
studies, Prof. Svasti studied
in many leading protein
research labs under the
supervision of many world-class
structural biologists.
Not only has he conducted
research, he also understood
science even further. Thus,
at the Faculty of Science,
Mahidol University, besides
teaching, he conducted
research on structural
biology with the goal to
promote research. His research
covered two fields, which
were 1) study the relationship
between protein structure
and function, and 2) study
the changes in protein
content or structure and
their effects on disease.
Prof. Svasti also took
the management position
at the Faculty of Science,
Mahidol University, professional
organizations as well as
international organizations.
His latest posts were the
chairman of The Science
Society of Thailand Under
the Patronage of His Majesty
the King and Head of the
Biochemistry Laboratory
at the Chulabhorn Research
Institute. What interest
Prof. Svasti in his work
for over 35 years was the
perception that “Science
is the central discipline
that unifies people from
different university/institution
in the country, with difference
in ethnicity, religion,
ideology, or political
viewpoint to work for a
greater good of humanity.”
Clin.
Prof. Teerawat Kulthanan,
Chairman of the Sood Sangvichien
Lecture Award 2009 Selection
Committee agreed that from
the sub-committee meeting,
unanimous decision was
obtained. Prof. M.R. Jisnuson
Svasti is an appropriate
candidate for this year’s
award. Prof. Svasti is
an expert with experience
in biochemistry at the
international level, and
he has over 140 publications
in international journals
and 28 publications at
the national as well as
5 Thai textbooks
Sood
Sangvichien Lecture is
a memorial lecture to honor
Prof. Sude Sangwichian,
M.D., Dean, Faculty of
Medicine Siriraj Hospital
and formal Head of the
Department of Anatomy,
Faculty of Medicine Siriraj
Hospital, Mahidol University.
Prof. Sangvichien is a
renaissance man in the
field of medicine in Thailand.
He is a well-respected
medical instructor and
a researcher who has deep
and continuous broad interests.
Sood Sangvichien Lecture
was initiated in 1970,
and has been carried out
annually. For each lecture,
an expert in the field
who has a well-documented
research impact in the
discipline would deliver
the lecture. The disciplines
include basic medical science,
genetics, medical education,
medical history, Audio
Visual, human physiology,
evolutionary biology, history,
and biology. The individual
chosen is not dependent
on gender, age, nationality,
religion, or institution.
If the recipient is a foreigner,
the research project must
be conducted in Thailand
or be conducting research
relating to Thailand. The
award recipient receives
a cash price of 50,000
Baht.
