On August 19, 2011, Mahidol University President Clin.Prof.Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn presided over the ceremony to lay the
foundation stone of a pilot biotech plant at Salaya.
Prof.Dr.Sansanee Chaiyaroj, vice president for Research and Academic Affairs and acting director of MU’s Center for Intellectual Property Management, delivered the report on the construction project’s background.
The construction of the pilot biotech plant is undertaken as part of Project for Innovation-driven Development of Biotechnology Industry, which aims to push forward the development of research projects with potential and readiness for application to industrial and commercial production.
This so-called translational research will benefit the production of bio-products for medicine, public health and disease prevention and provide a training ground for MU graduate and post-graduate students to acquire skills, expertise and experience in pilot scale product development.
The supply of human resources of such calibre for the industrial sector is a key factor in Thailand’s drive to increase its competitiveness and capacity for technology development. It would help reduce the country’s technology trade deficit and technology import and strengthen its domestic capacity to create and produce technologies.
The plant will have a usable space of 9,379.02 m2, a machine building, a factory building and laboratories.
