HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over the opening ceremony of Mahidol International Conference on Infections and Cancers 2012 at Landmark Ballroom, Landmark Hotel in Bangkok on February 6, 2012.

Prof. em. Dr. Pornchai Matangkasombat; Prof. Prasit Palittapongarnpim, M.D., Vice President for Research; and other university administrators were in attendance at the ceremony.
The conference, which ran February 6-8, aimed to set a platform for leading scientists and experts in various fields from Thailand and across the globe to exchange knowledge and scientific advancements that could lead to the development of knowledge on methods for prevention of infections and treatment measures for patients with chronic infections and infection-associated cancers.
The meeting featured an array of presentations by world-renowned scientists on recent advances in research and new technologies such as genome sequencing, proteomics, etc., which would pave the way for detection of microbes that may cause cancers, diagnosis and prevention of the diseases.
Joining as the keynote speakers were
Prof. Harald Zur Hausen, 2008 Nobel Laureate and 2005 Prince Mahidol Award awardee, who gave a presentation on various cancers caused by virus infections; and
Prof. Barry J. Marshall, 2005 Nobel Laureate and 2001 Prince Mahidol Award awardee, who discussed the significance and advances in research on Helicobacter pylori, the bacterium linked to the development of stomach cancer.
The event was expected to be a catalyst for interaction and knowledge exchange between Thai scientists and their international counterparts for the advancement of research in the fields.
