Mahidol University’s 120-plus-year history dates back to the establishment of Siriraj Hospital in 1888 and later of its medical school.
The school has since developed into present-day Mahidol University, the comprehensive university offering a multitude of programs in diverse fields of study and being the country’s top-ranked university according to Time Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking and Quacquarelli Symonds Asian University Ranking (QS APPLE).
In today’s world where knowledge is prized as the foundation for thriving societies, and universities have become an institution of prime importance as a center for pursuing, gathering, creating, disseminating and preserving knowledge.
With this in mind, Mahidol University has assumed the role of leader for change toward knowledge-based society at national, regional and global levels. It aims to become a global university while creating added value for Thai society.
As declared in its ‘Wisdom of the Land’ determination statement, Mahidol University has been committed to progressing alongside Thai society. To fulfill this role, the university has been dedicated to performing its duty to educate and help young people grow into graduates with knowledge, competence, civic-mindedness, and ethical concern and social awareness.
Further, the university has been promoting research initiatives and projects that tackle a wide range of problems and issues confronting Thailand from water management, the drive to become ‘Kitchen of the World’, the problems faced by the elderly, social inequality to emerging diseases.
The university has been moving forward with the internationalization of its teaching/learning and training through exchange of faculties and students, collaboration with overseas partners, and more publication of research papers in international journals.
Staffed with academics, experts and personnel of high caliber, experience and expertise in diverse fields and disciplines, Mahidol university has been fully committed to the role of ‘Wisdom of the Land’, serving as an intellectual sanctuary that offers ideas and guidance to help steer Thai society on the right course.
In this endeavor it has worked for the benefits of society in accordance with the guiding philosophy from its namesake, His Royal Father Prince Mahidol of Songkla, who stated that
“True success is not in the learning, but in its application to the benefit of mankind”.
