BIO 2009 at Atlanta, Georgia, USA

   

 

 

The National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC), National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) invited Mahidol University to participate in the 2009 BIO International Convention (BIO 2009) at Georgia World Congress Center, Atlanta, Georgia, USA from 18-21 May 2009. The BIO 2009 was a global event for biotechnology industry, and this year’s theme was Heal, Fuel, Feed the World. Three major events include exhibition, business forum, and international conference, and more than 2,000 exhibitors from public and private sectors and over 20,000 participants comprised of key policymakers, scientists, CEOs, and celebrities attended. NSTDA received the opportunity to show the business capacity and benefit from investing in biotechnology in Thailand.

The BIOTEC played the central role in coordinating with various organizations in Thailand, including Thailand Center of Excellence for Life Sciences (TCELS), The Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI), Mahidol University, Chulalongkorn University, King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi, and Tourism Authority of Thailand, to organize a booth, “Thailand Pavilion.” The booth provides information regarding R&D in Thailand, the strength and the opportunity as well as medical, agricultural, energy, and bio-resources. This event also publicize the Thailand Science Park, which provides services such as knowledge transfer, intellectual property management and commercialization, support and launching business in biotechnology.

Representatives from Mahidol University include Ms. Ratana Petchurai, Director, Division of Research Administration, Ms. Pimprapai Theeracheep, Director, Center of Intellectual Property Management and Assoc. Prof. Vanna Mahakittikun, director, Mahidol University Wisdom Application Center., Prof., Skorn Mongkolsuk, Ph.D., Assoc. Prof. Nardtida Tumrasvin from Faculty of Science, and Prof.Visanu Thamalikhitkul, Faculty of Medicine,Siriraj Hospital, also attended this event. In this event, Mahidol University presented specialized research projects which are dengue fever, medical products and services, plastic for farming and animal feeds, and biological resources. Others Mahidol’s projects were also presented along with NSTDA’s. This event showcased the biotechnological capacity of Thailand, and many participants expressed their interest in Thailand. The event was successful (see pictures).
