Stang Mongkolsuk Museum

Frequently, someone curiously asks who “Prof. Stang” is. But if you are from the old generation and don’t know who he is, then you are quite negligent. Professor Dr. Stang Mongkolsuk is the one who had pioneered and laid the foundation of science and technology education in Thailand. Apart from paving the way for the science education, he also “created a man to be a seed,” which grew and flourished as a pillar in the scientific field. One of the most obvious achievements is the founding of “Faculty of Medical Science of Premedical School” or “Faculty of Science, Mahidol University” in the present.

Stang Mongkolsuk Museum establishment project had been launched in 2004, in order to honor “Professor Dr. Stang Mongkolsuk,” the first dean and the founder of the Faculty of Science, Mahidol University. The project had been conducted along with the great improvement of the library in the same year. The library of the faculty was in service since 1968, which is over 36 years, and it was declined with age. So the library improvement was conducted along with the establishment of Stang Mongkolsuk Museum for that reason. The museum is situated on the 3rd floor of Chemistry Building in the area of the library of the Faculty of Science. The 30 square-meter space of the museum is for exhibiting the history and works, collecting important documents, archives, and various objects which are related to Professor Stang and Faculty of Science, and being a learning center for students, faculty staffs, and anyone who is interested. The exhibition and collections will let the next generation to learn the history and honor Professor Stang.

The museum was completed on December 15, 2004, with the budget of 310,000 baht, and officially opened on July 15, 2005, which is the 86th birthday of Professor Stang. Now the museum is in the process of collecting data from various sources and opens for donation of photos and historical objects relating to the faculty. The museum exhibits everything about Professor Stang, including his biography, family, education, researches, and also his personal things like glasses, pipe, official passport, and his favorite gramophone records. These collections are from the favor of the Professor’s family, students, and closed friends. Moreover, there is the photo exhibition of Professor Stang, and some of these are important historical evidences, including the photo of Professor and the founding of Faculty of Science, Mahidol University, or the photo of him taken with students and many well-known figures. Some of these photos are original, and some are copies. In the future, the museum has a plan to do “the Historical Photo Exhibition of Faculty of Science, Mahidol University”, which includes an electronic exhibition.
