Mahidol University took part in 16th four-partnered traditional academic conference, titled "Thailand's New Form of Security in the Context of ASEAN Community: A Case Study of Peace Building in the Southern Border Provinces" on August 30, 2013 at Royal Thai Navy Convention Hall.
Welcome speeches and reports were given by Prof. Rajata Rajatanavin, MU President, Prof. Dr. Somkid Lertpaitoon, Rector of Thammasat University, Assoc. Prof. Poonpipope Kasemsap, Kasetsart University Vice President for International Affairs, and Vice Admiral Bongsoot Singnarong, Director of General Naval Education Department and the conference's host.
The morning session featured a keynote speech on "Security in Thailand's Southern Border Provinces and ASEAN Community" by Lt. Gen. Paradorn Pattanatabut, secretary-general of National Security Council, followed by a panel discussion on "Peace Building in the Southern Border Provinces" by speakers including Prof. Dr. Chaiwat Satha-anand, political science professor at Thammasat University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gothom Arya, of Mahidol University's Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies, Asst. Prof. Dr. Thanwa Jitsanguan, Vice President of Special Projects, Kasetsart University, and Captain Somkiat Polprayoon, commander of Marine Task Force at Chulabhorn Military Camp.
The afternoon session featured academic presentations using short films under the theme of "Peace in the Southern Border Provinces" by students from the four institutions. The entries included Dream by the Royal Thai Navy, Nostalgia by Thammasat University, Wound by Kasetsart University, and Cigarette by Mahidol University. Dream won the outstanding short film award while the other three were runner-ups.
Toward the end of the conference Vice Admiral Bongsoot handed over the flag to Thammasat University, the conference's next host.
