Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital and SUN/SixERS held a joint academic conference at Siriraj Medical Research Centre, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, on August 28, 2013 to share cutting-edge research from Japan and exchange medical knowledge. The conference featured many interesting topics such as "Influenza virus epidemiology in Myanmar" "Climate, climate change and health in Tropical Asia" "Obesity, insulin resistance, and fatty liver disease: new insights and potential new treatments" and "Molecular mechanism on Asian type diabetes & HIGO program, a program for leading graduate schools."
The event was primarily coordinated by Asean University Network (AUN) that has been promoting the exchange of students, scholars, and knowledge between universities in South East Asia. As for SUN/SixERS, it is a university network in Japan consisting of 6 outstanding universities: Chiba University, Kanazawa University, Kumamoto University, Nagasaki University, Niigata University, and Okayama University. Many distinguish Japanese and Thai professors attended the conference, to name a few: Prof. Dr. Shinobu Okada from Chiba University, Prof. Dr. Yoshifumi Ninomiya from Okayama University, Prof. Dr. Kazuhito Tomizawa from Kumamoto University, Assoc. Prof. Anchalee Tungtrongchitr, Dr.Pornpoj Pramyothin, Assoc. Prof. Nattachet Plengvidhya, and Prof. Dr. Pilaipan Puthavathana.
From the discussion on collaboration, there might be some exchange programs between Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital and SUN/SixERS in the future, such as research exchange programs for staff and researchers, and educational exchange programs for undergraduate students and post-graduate students. Also, there might be a possibility of dual graduate programs, where the students get one joint degree from two institutes.
